A steeply sloping, rather long and narrow site with a large new build in progress presented some particular challenges for the garden design. The owners wanted a tropical-feeling garden around the house, though preferably without too much irrigation, and a more waterwise approach for the remaining land, with plenty of architectural planting throughout.

Our response was a modern tropical design for around the house, with geometric paving and pergolas contrasting with big leaves and lots of green. Frangipanis and abundant flowering climbers add pops of white and electric purple among the green, which sings out against the black garden walls.

The sweeping driveway is flanked by mass planting of drought-tolerant grasses and perennials, punctuated with architectural feature plants, while the tall umbrella pines offered us a ready-made Mediterranean woodland setting which houses a boule court among soft plantings of native perennials and shrubs.

We designed several bespoke water features for different garden areas, including an imposing water curtain flanked by two walls of mini-cascades which sits along side the pool and serves as both focal point looking out from the terrace, and a picture frame for the big leaves planted around and behind it.

Waterwise provided all design, construction, supplier procurement and supervision services for the build of the garden.
