Waterwise Gardens bark

Marilyn was the garden manager for three years at this four-star apartment resort near Albufeira, working on a project developed by landscape architect Claudia Schwarzer and biologist Udo Schwarzer to transform the conventional hotel grounds into a landscape of native Algarve coastal plants. With several thousand square metres of lawn and water bills running well into the thousands each month, the decision to try something different was easy to make, and the soft textures, flowers, fruit and perfumes, changing with the seasons, have been a delight for the hotel clients and a boon to local wildlife. The garden is alive with butterflies and birds, and even the more timid animals such as chamaeleons are becoming an increasingly common sight.
