Waterwise Gardens bark

What kind of garden can I have?

As has been said, there are plants enough within the Mediterranean palette to fulfil practically any need. Were you dreaming of a formal garden, but worried about the watering for all that clipped greenery? Try using small-leaved myrtle or rosemary, instead of box. And what about roses? There are plenty of species that are surprisingly resistant to heat and drought, but are still perfectly beautiful.

Did you have a minimalist Japanese garden in mind? Great  idea – a bonsai umbrella pine, raked gravel and sculptural rocks will need no water at all. Speaking of rock gardens, this is another perfect choice – there are a huge variety of cacti, succulents and small mound-forming plants that will LOVE your rockery. How about Australian?  With many regions of the southern continent sharing our climate almost exactly, you can create an exotic, antipodean feeling with no need for irrigation stresses.

Ok, that’s all very well... but for those of us who love our big, green, lush tropicals? Try using a canopy of appropriate trees as shade cover – with protection from the harsh sun, large leaved plants such as swiss-cheese plant (Monstera deliciosa), philodendron and Kaffir lily (Clivia miniata) are surprisingly drought-resistant.

And if you really, REALLY want a lawn still, there are alternatives – from carpets of low herbs such as thyme, to green creepers such as Phyla nodiflora (syn. Lippia nodiflora) which will even take a smart clip with the lawnmower.

But the gardens we like best of all are those that reflect the natural Mediterranean landscape.  In rural areas, is there anything so beautiful as a cork tree or olive grove underpinned by wildflowers in spring? By the coast, the flower-starred carpets of small round shrubs? In the barrocal, the interwoven evergreens and trees with their seemingly infinite variations of grey, green, lime and silver? Look at your surroundings and, with time, the right garden will slowly suggest itself to you.
